THE THIRD DAY - FLOWERS
20:47, 27 January 2008Snowdrops Start the Year
While I can only use this central column, without photos, I am pasting up my sequence of sonnets and extended sonnets on the Seven Days of Creation. Look back to 4 January 08 for the start.
Look back to spring 07 for plenty of lovely flower photos, and pray for my website's recovery!
THE CHURCHYARD FLOODED WITH SNOWDROPS
White, because only white will do
To harvest the day’s short light;
Pools of snowdrops, like extra snow,
Bless the chill soil, pure white!
Plain white, simple white, gentle white;
No perfume, just tipped with green;
True white, repeated white, unvarying;
Fallen sky lights the woodland scene.
The sombre thickets of summer
Where gloom forbids anything grow,
Transparently welcome late winter
With winter’s white wealth: living snow.
Tangled twigs in the winter sky
Weave black and white high above;
On the ground this monochrome carpet,
Flora’s first cautious move.
