SPY WEDNESDAY
21:15, 19 March 2008In medieval times, the Wednesday before Easter earned the title Spy Wednesday because the churches read the story of Judas going to the Jewish high priests and agreeing a price for betraying Jesus' whereabouts. Judas led the arresting squad to the garden where Jesus and his followers were spending the night.
This meditation suggests what Jesus might have thought when Judas greeted Him.
THE BETRAYAL
(Jesus to Judas) Luke 22,47
A hug at last,
From you who had no patience with affection:
No time for the warm contact
That says “I’m glad you’re real,
Glad you’re here, glad to be close to you,
Glad you’re you.”
You were the loner,
No brother, no close friend,
To build together, achieve together,
Back each other up, value each other.
You needed to weigh and count
Everything’s value. The best things cannot be measured.
Love made you uneasy. How can we trust
Something that’s free, given without being earned?
Beyond our control?
How can we test it, before we succumb?
Money is safe.
Money can be weighed and counted.
We know where we’ve put it.
Everyone can recognise what we’ve got.
Who can recognise love?
When we hug someone and know,
Through their warmth,
Who we are.
As you do now!
